Two sides, two moods
Alonaki, on the east side, is about 500 m of sand and pebbles, open to waves, with umbrellas at its western end and quiet at the far end. Houma, on the west, is a small sandy cove that faces west and is well sheltered.
Behind Houma grows a protected colony of junipers. They grow very slowly, so do not break or tie anything to the branches; use the umbrellas instead for shade.
Getting there
Drive west from Paleochora on the road to Koundoura; Grammeno is signed and the road is paved. Without a car, take the bus from Chania to Paleochora and a short taxi ride.
There is an organised campsite on the peninsula and a few rooms and tavernas on the road.
Nearby
Plakaki and the Karavopetra coves are under 1 km back towards Paleochora, Koundoura beach is 1.3 km west, and the Pelekaniotis gorge is close by for a short walk.
