Where is Balos Beach?

Balos is on the northwest coast of Crete in the Chania region, about 17 kilometres northwest of Kissamos and about 56 kilometres from Chania town. It is part of the protected Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa complex, which includes the lagoon, the Gramvousa peninsula and the islet of Imeri Gramvousa.

The beach sits on a shallow lagoon separated from the open sea by a narrow strip of sand. The water shifts from pale turquoise to deep blue depending on the depth, and the fine white-pink sand comes from the erosion of the surrounding limestone and from crushed shells.

How to get to Balos

By car

There is no paved road. A rocky dirt road leads to the Balos car park, and the final stretch is steep, narrow and bumpy. A car with high ground clearance or a 4x4 makes the drive more comfortable.

Rental car warning: many rental agreements do not cover unpaved roads like the one to Balos. Ask before you go. If you are still choosing a car, you can compare available Crete car rentals and check the supplier’s road restrictions.

The walk down

From the car park, the only way down is a steep, rocky path of about 30 minutes. It can be hard work in summer, so wear proper shoes and carry water and sunscreen. The views over the lagoon on the way down are the best on the whole trip.

By 4x4 shuttle bus

A 4x4 shuttle runs from Kissamos town centre to the Balos car park, so you avoid driving the dirt road yourself. You still walk the path down to the beach.

By boat from Kissamos

Boat tours leave from Kissamos port and usually combine Balos with the islet of Imeri Gramvousa and its Venetian fortress. This is the easiest option if you prefer not to hike. Private boat tours are also available.

Facilities at Balos

Facilities have improved in recent years: there are toilets, changing cabins and a small shop selling snacks, drinks and beach accessories, plus umbrellas and sun loungers for rent. There are no water sports, only a few paddle boats with slides. Facilities are simpler than at organised beaches, so come prepared.

The area is also rich in wildlife, with rare birds, reptiles and fish. Wild olive trees, junipers and dwarf palms cover the hillsides.

History of Gramvousa

The area has a long history. The Venetians built a fortress on Imeri Gramvousa in the 16th century; it later passed to the Ottomans and became a famous base for pirates. A local legend says a pirate ship carrying stolen treasure sank here while fleeing the Venetians, spilling its gold into the sea.
