The beach
Kavros continues the great curve of sand that starts at Georgioupolis. Some stretches in front of hotels are organised with sunbeds and bars; others are left unorganised for people who want quiet.
Behind the beach is a dune system that protects the shore from erosion. It has been damaged by development, so use the marked paths.
Waves and safety
Kavros faces north and catches the summer wind. Waves can be strong and create currents, so watch the flags and keep children close. On those days Kalivaki, at the sheltered west end of the bay, is the better swim.
Getting there and nearby
Access is straight off the old national road between Georgioupolis and Rethymno, with roadside parking. Lake Kournas is a short drive inland, and the springs of Argyroupoli are about half an hour south.
