The beach
The bay is almost closed, so the water is usually still. An old dock where boats once sheltered gives the beach its name. Sunbeds, showers, a lifeguard and water sports operate in season, and the village's cafés and tavernas are right there.
It is busy in summer, especially with families.
Getting there
Follow the main road down into Bali; Varkotopos is in front of the centre, between Livadi and the harbour. Parking fills up by mid-morning in high season.
Nearby
Limani and Karavostasi are 400 to 800 m north, Livadi about 400 m south. The Attali monastery above the village is about 1.3 km away, and Melidoni cave is under 6 km inland.
Questions before you go
Is Varkotopos good for toddlers?
Yes, it is the shallowest and calmest of Bali's beaches.
Is Varkotopos sand?
Sand mixed with gravel.
Where do I park for Varkotopos?
In the village centre; arrive early in July and August.
