The beach
Tholos has pebbles with sand on its western side, a small harbour and tamarisks for shade. Freshwater springs from the Thripti mountains bubble up under the sea, so the light-blue water is cooler than elsewhere. It is often a little wavy. Development is light: a few rooms and tavernas.
History around Tholos
Psira islet, opposite, was an important Minoan harbour town. A Roman granary stands about 200 m from the beach, and the frescoed chapel of Agios Antonios is to the west.
Near Kavousi, the Azorias olive tree is claimed to be well over 3,000 years old.
Nearby
Two tiny pebble beaches at Legameni are just north. Malavra, 2 km east under high cliffs, is reachable only by boat. Inland, the Mesonas and Havgas gorges offer walks outside the hottest months.
