The beach
The sand is long and well organised, with beach bars, water sports and lifeguards. East of the small harbour, artificial breakwaters create more sheltered coves. Like the rest of this coast it faces north and is often wavy in the afternoon.
Sea turtles nest here in summer; keep clear of marked nests.
Pano Platanias
The old village climbs the hill above the resort. Walk or drive up for views over the bay and Thodorou islet, especially at sunset, and for tavernas away from the main road.
Evenings
Platanias has the largest concentration of bars and clubs on the west coast. If you want quiet nights, stay in Gerani or Agia Marina and come here only when you want the noise.
Nearby
German tunnels from the Second World War are about 1 km away, the Keritis river 1 km, and Agia Marina 2.5 km east. Buses to Chania run frequently.
