Getting there
From Elounda drive east past the salt pans and windmills and cross the narrow isthmus; a small canal cut by the French army in 1897 separates the lagoon from Mirabello Bay, with ancient Olous submerged nearby. The road becomes a dirt track; after 200 to 300 m turn right across the peninsula and park at the chapel of Agios Loukas. A short downhill path leads to the beach.
The cove
The sand is white, the water shallow and calm, and old olive groves surround the bay. There are no facilities, so bring water and shade.
Excursion boats arrive around midday in summer. Come early in the morning or late in the afternoon to have it nearly to yourself, especially in August.
History
North of the beach stand the remains of an early Christian basilica of the 5th to 6th century, discovered in 1971, and the Byzantine chapel of Agios Fokas. Gulls nest in their thousands on the islet of Kolokytha offshore.
