The beach
The main beach runs about 2 km from the Almyros river toward Kavros, with dunes behind and sand underfoot. The Perastikos river crosses it about 700 m east of the harbour.
This coast is exposed to north winds. On windy days currents can be dangerous: swim only near lifeguards and respect the flags.
The chapel and the river
The little white chapel of Agios Nikolaos stands on a rock at the end of the causeway beyond the harbour, and makes a good evening walk. The Almyros river harbour, lined with fishing boats and pedalos, is the other postcard view.
Base for the area
Georgioupolis has a eucalyptus-shaded square, plenty of rooms and tavernas, and buses on the Chania–Rethymno route. Lake Kournas, Crete's only natural freshwater lake, is 4 km inland.
Turtles
Loggerhead turtles nest on this coast from May to September. Avoid marked nests and leave the beach clean at night.
