The beach
The beach is split into two coves, pebbly with rocks, with calm, clear water good for snorkelling. Big carob trees give shade. It is quiet and popular with campers and naturists.
The name means 'pigeons', after the birds that nest in the small sea caves at Cape Kastelos, which has arches, boulders and tiny sandy inlets.
History
In May 1944 the German commander General Kreipe, kidnapped near Heraklion by a team of British officers and Cretan resistance fighters, was evacuated by boat to Egypt from this coast. Allied boats and submarines used the bay for supplies during the occupation.
Getting there
Take the paved road to Polyrizos, then the first dirt road on the left. A 4 km dirt road also links Lakki (near Skaloti) with Polyrizos. Agia Marina is 500 m west, Korakas 1.8 km east.
