The coves
The coast here, known as Drymiskiani Gialia, is a series of sandy coves separated by rocks and reefs: Ammoudi first, then Kefala, with its sharp rock rising from the sand, then Anatolika and on towards the Kerames beaches.
The water is blue and deep, good for snorkelling. There are few trees, but big rocks give shade through the day. The eastern coves are the quietest and are used by naturists.
The Preveli shortcut
Most people park at Ammoudi and take the short trail west over the headland down to Preveli palm beach, about 400 m away. It avoids the steep stairs from the Preveli car park, though it is still rocky; wear proper shoes.
Getting there
The coast is harder to reach than other south Rethymno beaches: follow the signs for Drymiskos from the road towards Preveli and continue to the end of the asphalt. Preveli monastery is about 2 km away.
