Why locals use it
Chrissi Akti is one of the easiest proper sandy beaches to reach from Chania. It is well organised, with sunbeds, changing rooms, a lifeguard and a children's playground, and it has been awarded a Blue Flag.
The seabed shelves gently, so children can paddle safely, and the bay's shape keeps it calmer than the open beaches further west.
Getting there without a car
City buses run from the centre of Chania along the coast road toward Kalamaki and stop near the beach. You can also walk or cycle along the seafront from Nea Chora in about 35 to 40 minutes.
Nearby coves
The Agii Apostoli coves are right next door, a few minutes' walk west, with more sand and small rocky inlets. Further west, Kalamaki and Glaros continue the line of beaches toward Platanias.
When to go
Weekends in July and August are busy with Chania families. Weekday mornings and early evenings are calmer, and the beach is pleasant for a late swim before dinner in town.
