The route
The path starts at Imbros, on the Vryses–Chora Sfakion road, and descends steadily along the gorge floor. The walls rise high on both sides, and at the narrowest point the gorge is only about 1.6 m wide. There is a natural rock arch along the way.
It is a straightforward downhill walk on stones and gravel. Wear good shoes, carry water and avoid the midday heat in summer.
History
In 1941 the gorge was one of the routes taken by Allied soldiers retreating to Chora Sfakion to be evacuated by sea after the Battle of Crete.
Getting back
Taxis wait at Komitades to take walkers back up to Imbros for their cars; agree the fare first. Alternatively, continue to Chora Sfakion (about 5 km) for lunch and the bus to Chania.
Fees and timing
A small fee is collected at the entrance in season. Imbros is often open when Samaria is closed, which makes it a good alternative early or late in the year.
