- About 3 hours
- Start
- Agia Irini village, 46 km from Chania

The walk
The path starts just below Agia Irini village on the Chania–Sougia road and descends through pine, cypress and plane trees, crossing the dry stream bed several times. There are some steep, rocky sections, but no climbing.
It is shadier and less crowded than Samaria, which makes it a good first gorge or a choice for hot days. Wear proper shoes and carry water.
Where it ends
The gorge ends at a small kiosk near the coast road. From there it is about 45 minutes' walk along the road to Sougia, a quiet village with a long beach of coarse sand and pebbles and a few tavernas. A swim at the end is the reward.
Getting back
The problem with any linear walk is the return. Options are a taxi from Sougia back to your car at Agia Irini, the KTEL bus between Chania and Sougia (check times in advance), or the south-coast ferry that leaves Sougia once a day toward Agia Roumeli, Chora Sfakion and Paleochora.
Fees and season
In season a small entrance fee is collected at the top. The gorge can be closed after heavy rain, and summer midday heat is hard work: start early.
