The beach
The sand formed where the river meets the sea. It sits between Cape Stavros to the east and Kastellos hill to the west, which give some shelter, but the beach faces north and the sea is often wavy.
At the western end, in front of a large hotel, a small pier shelters swimmers, with umbrellas, showers, water sports, cafés and tavernas. The eastern part, near a petrol station, is unorganised and quieter.
Getting there
The national road between Heraklion and Rethymno runs right beside the beach, with an exit for Fodele. Buses stop on the national road.
Fodele village
Three kilometres inland, Fodele sits in a green valley of orange and lemon groves, with tavernas under plane trees along the river. It is known as the birthplace of the painter El Greco; a small museum in the house associated with him is about 2 km from the beach.
