Shade and water
The village is built around streams and springs, with big plane trees over the river and the main square. On a hot day it is noticeably cooler than the coast.
What to eat
Vryses is known for its thick sheep's-milk yoghurt, served with honey in the cafés by the river. Tavernas along the water serve grilled meat and local dishes.
A stop on the way south
From Vryses the road climbs to the Askyfou plateau, passes Imbros, where the gorge walk starts, and descends to Chora Sfakion. A coffee or yoghurt in Vryses is the classic pause before that drive.
Nearby
Vamos is a few kilometres north, and Georgioupolis and Lake Kournas are about 15 minutes east.
