The beach
The main beach is sandy and shallow, with sunbeds and tavernas along the front. The rocky edges and the islet offshore are good for snorkelling. When the wind is up, Almyrida is also used for windsurfing.
The basilica
At the western end of the village, by the sea, are the foundations of an early Christian basilica with remains of mosaic floors. It takes a few minutes to see and is free.

Village base
Almyrida is small and relaxed, with rooms, apartments and tavernas. The hill village of Plaka is just above it, and Gavalochori, with its folklore museum and Venetian wells, is about 4 km inland.
Getting around
A car makes Apokoronas much easier, though buses link Almyrida with Kalyves and Chania in season.
