The beach
The town beach is big enough to absorb most of Rethymno's summer crowds. Sunbeds, showers, lifeguard stations and water sports line the sand, with tavernas, bars and cafés along the promenade road behind.
It faces north, so expect waves on windy afternoons; mornings are usually calmer.
Turtles
This is one of the most important loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting beaches in Crete. Nests are fenced off in summer: keep away from them, don't leave beach furniture out at night and avoid lights on the sand after dark.
Getting there
Walk from the old town: the beach begins beside the marina, a few minutes from the Rimondi Fountain and the Venetian harbour. Further east, the sand continues towards Adele, Skaleta and beyond.
