The beaches
Livadi, the first beach as you enter the village, is the longest, organised, with a Blue Flag, but the most exposed to wind. Varkotopos is about 400 m further on, the harbour beach (Limani) about 700 m, and Karavostasi, the smallest and most sheltered, about 1.1 km.
All are sandy with shallow water, but none has much natural shade: rent an umbrella or bring one.
Where to stay
Hotels and apartments climb the slopes around the bay. Stay near the harbour if you want to walk to tavernas; stay above Livadi for space and views. The streets are steep.

Atali monastery
The monastery of Agios Ioannis (Atali) is about 1.3 km uphill from the harbour, with views over the bay. The village takes its name from ancient Astali.
Getting there
Bali is just off the national road between Rethymno and Heraklion, and buses on that route stop at the junction.
