- Distance
- About 800 m south of Matala
- Access
- 15–25 min path, or boat in summer
- Facilities
- Basic café (not always open), little shade

The walk
The path starts at the southern end of Matala village and climbs over the Kastri hill. The first part involves some easy scrambling on rock; the end is a steep descent to the beach. Close any shepherd's gate behind you.
Wear trainers or sandals with grip, not flip-flops, and avoid the midday heat.
The beach
The sand has a reddish tint from the surrounding rock, and cliffs rise behind it. It faces west and is often wavy when the west wind blows. There is a basic café that is not always open and only a few umbrellas, so bring water, food and shade.
The northern part is used by naturists. The area is protected under Natura 2000.
By boat
In summer small boats run from Matala harbour, which avoids the walk. Ask at the harbour for times.
Tips
Arrive in the morning for the calmest sea and coolest walk, and stay on in Matala for sunset over its caves.
