River and sea
The Geropotamos river forms a small lake and reed-fringed wetland, protected under Natura 2000, before it reaches the beach. The fresh water makes the sea noticeably cooler near the mouth.
The beach itself is small, with umbrellas and a canteen, and the water deepens quickly. It faces north and gets waves on windy days.
The Kamara
Just to the west, a natural rock arch known as Kamara frames a tiny beach that is reached only by boat or swimming on very calm days.
Getting there
Drive to the bridge on the national road and take the side road down. Buses between Rethymno and Heraklion pass by; ask the driver to stop. Panormo, with tavernas and a harbour beach, is 3 km east.
