The beach
The shore is long and open to north winds, so calm mornings are best for swimming. Parts near the hotels are organised; the western end by the old airfield is quieter.
Turtles nest on this coast in summer.
Battle of Crete
In May 1941 German paratroopers landed around Maleme airfield. After heavy losses they captured it, which allowed reinforcements to fly in and decided the Battle of Crete.
The German war cemetery on Hill 107, about 1.3 km from the beach, holds around 4,500 graves and overlooks the airfield and bay. It is a sober and well-kept place to visit.
Older history
About 1.1 km away there is a Late Minoan domed (tholos) tomb, a reminder that the coast was settled long before the war.
Getting there
Maleme is on the coast road with regular buses from Chania. Tavronitis and Gerani are on either side.
