The old village
A traditional stone road runs through the old neighbourhood, lined with restored houses, many now used as guesthouses. Wander slowly: it is a small place, but well kept.
Karydi monastery
Just outside the village, the Karydi monastery complex dates from between the 13th and 19th centuries. Its most striking feature is a large old olive press with twelve arches.
Food
Vamos became a food destination in the 1990s, when people from Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion began driving out to its tavernas. Chasomeri, in the old neighbourhood, serves inventive home cooking and hosts small cultural events.
Base for Apokoronas
From Vamos you can reach Gavalochori, Almyrida, Kalyves, Aptera and the Vryses road to Sfakia in a short drive.
