The beach
Keratides continues the pebble shore north of Halikia, just past the outlet of the Azogirianos river. It is not organised in the usual sense, and that is its appeal: peace and quiet within walking distance of town.
The water is clear and usually calm, with rocks that give shade and good snorkelling. The name comes from the carob trees (keratia) that grow in the area.
When to go
When south-westerly winds bring big waves to Pahia Ammos on the other side of Paleochora, the east-side beaches, Keratides included, are the calmer choice.
Getting there and onward
Walk north along the shore from Halikia (about 400 m), or drive to the campsite and take the dirt track. A dirt road continues along the coast towards Gialiskari and the Anydri beaches, and the E4 path towards ancient Lissos and Sougia starts nearby.
Questions before you go
How far is Keratides from Paleochora?
About 1 km from the harbour, past Halikia beach and the campsite.
Is Keratides beach organised?
Hardly at all. Food and drink are back in town or at the campsite.
Is Keratides good on windy days?
Yes, on south-westerly days it is calmer than Paleochora's sandy west-side beach.
