Pebbles or sand?
Paleochora has two town beaches. Pahia Ammos, on the west side, is sandy and catches the west wind; Halikia, on the east, is pebbly, clearer and usually calmer. Locals and Greek families often prefer Halikia for that reason.
The round pebbles make for very clear water and good snorkelling along the edges. Water shoes are useful.
Getting there
Walk from the harbour or the centre: Halikia starts by the port and runs for about a kilometre. There is roadside parking along the waterfront road.
Cafés and tavernas line the road behind the beach, and the Venetian fort, Castel Selino, is about 700 m away on the tip of the peninsula.
Further along
Past the Azogirianos river mouth and the campsite, the quieter pebble beach of Keratides continues the shore. From there the E4 path heads east towards ancient Lissos and Sougia.
Questions before you go
Is Halikia beach sand or pebbles?
Round pebbles. Paleochora's sandy beach is Pahia Ammos on the other side of town.
Is Halikia calmer than Pahia Ammos?
Usually yes. It faces east, so it is more sheltered when the west wind makes Pahia Ammos rough.
Can I walk to Halikia from Paleochora?
Yes, it starts beside the harbour and is a few minutes' walk from the centre.
