The beach
The river mouth forms a small protected wetland, and the beach west of it is long, sandy and largely undeveloped, with a few rocky patches on the sea bed. Lazaretta islet sits offshore.
It faces north, so it is often wavy. On calm days the shallow water is pleasant for a swim close to the city.
Getting there
It is walkable from Nea Chora along the coast, or a short ride on the city buses that run west towards Kalamaki. There is roadside parking.
Golden Beach (Chrissi Akti) is next to the west and has fuller facilities if you want sunbeds and a lifeguard.
Respect the wetland
The river mouth is protected habitat for birds. Keep to the beach, keep dogs on a lead and take rubbish away with you.
