The three coves
The first is south of a small fort on the tip of a peninsula, with white sand and a few palms. The second is right in front of the parking area, sandy with rocks, good for snorkelling. The third, hidden behind the hill north of the car park, is the longest, with fine sand and turquoise water.
All are unorganised and quiet; some people swim without clothes.
Ancient Itanos
Itanos was an important harbour city in the far east of Crete. Its ruins are scattered over the low hills, and part of the city now lies underwater off the coves.
Getting there
Drive towards Vai and continue north on the paved road to the archaeological site, park there and walk the short trails to the coves. Combine with Vai, 1 km south, and Toplou monastery, about 6 km away.
