Douliana: Heliostasi
Heliostasi, on the square in Douliana, looks over the valley toward the mountains. The family grows its own vegetables and makes its own olive oil and mountain honey, which you can buy. The menu runs from Cretan starters such as kalitsounia and dakos to stews, rabbit and grilled meat.
Vamos: Chasomeri
In the old neighbourhood of Vamos, Chasomeri ('a waste of time') is a small place with rotating art on the walls and occasional cinema and live music. The cook, Evgenia, changes the menu often; look for pastourma pie and kelemia, stuffed onions. The house raki is made from malvazia and moschato grapes.
Embrosneros: Kourgialis
Taverna Kourgialis in Embrosneros, about 40 minutes from Chania, is known for antikristo lamb roasted slowly beside open coals. It must be ordered at least a day ahead. Other dishes include staka, Sfakian pie with honey and stuffed vegetables, served in a shaded courtyard.
Planning
Village tavernas keep shorter hours out of season, so call before driving. Sunday lunch is the busiest time.
