Balos lagoon in western Crete

West Crete Road Trip: A 7-Day Itinerary from Chania

By TripToCrete2 min read

A 7-day West Crete road trip from Chania: the Old Town, Balos, Falasarna, Elafonisi, Samaria Gorge, Loutro and Sfakia, and Rethymno or Preveli.

Quick answer: a week is enough to see the best of western Crete by car. Base yourself in Chania and spend the days on the old town, Balos and Gramvousa, Falasarna, Elafonisi, Samaria Gorge, the south coast around Loutro and Sfakia, and a final day in Rethymno or at Preveli.

This is the route we suggest to friends visiting Chania for the first time. It keeps driving times reasonable, mixes beaches with villages and history, and leaves room for long lunches.

Day 1: Chania old town and harbour

Settle in and walk the Old Town: the Venetian harbour and lighthouse, the lanes of Topanas, the Splantzia quarter and the covered market. Have dinner at one of our favourite taverns.

Day 2: Balos lagoon and Gramvousa

Drive to Kissamos (about 45 minutes) and take the morning boat to Imeri Gramvousa and Balos, or drive the dirt road to the Balos car park and walk down. Climb to the Venetian fortress on Gramvousa for the view.

Day 3: Falasarna and the west coast

A slow day on the long sandy beach of Falasarna, with a look at the ruins of ancient Falasarna at its northern end. Stay for one of the best sunsets in Crete.

Day 4: Elafonisi and Kedrodasos

Leave early for Elafonisi, with its pink sand and shallow lagoon. If you like quieter beaches, walk east along the coast path to Kedrodasos. Stop at a mountain village taverna on the drive back.

Day 5: Samaria Gorge

Crete's most famous hike runs about 16 km from the Omalos plateau down to Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea, where a ferry takes you on to Chora Sfakion and a bus back to Chania. The gorge usually opens from May to October. Book an organised trip or plan the buses carefully the day before.

Day 6: Sfakia, Loutro and Frangokastello

Drive over the White Mountains to Sfakia. Take the short boat to car-free Loutro for a swim and lunch, then stop at the Venetian castle and shallow beach of Frangokastello on the way back.

Day 7: Rethymno or Preveli

Finish with the Venetian and Ottoman old town of Rethymno and its Fortezza, or drive south to the palm forest and river beach of Preveli.

How many days do you need in western Crete?

Seven days covers the highlights at a relaxed pace. With five days, drop Day 7 and combine Balos and Falasarna. With ten or more, add Lasithi and Knossos in the east.

Where should I stay for a West Crete road trip?

Chania town is the easiest base: every day trip above is within about two hours. If you prefer quiet evenings, add a night or two on the south coast in Sfakia or Plakias.

You will need a car for most of this route. Read our tips for driving in Crete and compare available Crete car rentals when your dates are set.
