When to visit Crete: sea temperatures, crowds, prices and weather month by month, from spring hiking to the warm sea of September and October.
Quick answer: the best time to visit Crete is from late May to June and from September to mid-October. The sea is warm, the days are long and the island is less crowded and cheaper than in July and August. April and May are best for hiking and wildflowers; July and August are the hottest and busiest months.

Crete month by month
April and May
Spring is green, with wildflowers and snow still on the White Mountains in early spring. Days are warm, the sea is still cool for most swimmers until late May, and it is the best season for walking. Greek Orthodox Easter often falls in April or early May; see our guide to Greek Easter traditions.
June
One of our favourite months. The sea has warmed up, everything is open, and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. Samaria Gorge is open and not too hot.
July and August
Peak season: hot, dry and busy, with the highest prices. The north wind (meltemi) can make north and west-coast beaches wavy, while the south coast is often calmer. Plan beach visits for early morning and late afternoon.
September and October
The sea is at its warmest in September and still pleasant in October. Crowds thin out, the light softens and it is a great time for road trips. The first autumn rains usually arrive in late October or November.
November to March
Winter is mild compared with northern Europe but rainier, and many hotels and beach tavernas close. It is a good time for towns, museums and local life. Chania and Heraklion stay lively year-round.
What is the hottest month in Crete?
July and August are the hottest months, with frequent heatwaves inland and in the south. Carry water, avoid hiking at midday and choose shaded beaches or the sea breeze of the north coast.
When is the sea warm enough to swim in Crete?
For most people the sea is comfortable from June to October, and warmest in August and September. Hardy swimmers start in May.
When is Crete least crowded?
Late April, May, late September and October offer good weather with far fewer visitors than mid-summer. In winter the island is quiet but some tourist services are closed.
