Paleochora
Paleochora is built on a peninsula with the sandy Pachia Ammos beach on one side and pebbly Halikia on the other, so there is usually a sheltered side. It has supermarkets, a pharmacy, a range of restaurants, an open-air cinema and ferries to Gavdos and the south coast.
Sougia
Sougia has a single long beach of coarse sand and pebbles, a handful of tavernas and rooms, and no large hotels. It is the end point of the Agia Irini gorge, and a path leads west to ancient Lissos.
Linking them
Experienced walkers can follow the E4 between the two in about 5–6 hours via Lissos, and return by the south-coast ferry when it runs.
