The beach
The beach runs about 1.5 km east from the small harbour. The water is clear and deepens quickly. The far eastern end is traditionally used by naturists.
Ancient history
Sougia was Syia, the port of the Dorian city of Elyros, whose ruins lie inland. West of the harbour, a path through the Lissos gorge reaches ancient Lissos in about 1.5–2 hours: a small sanctuary of Asklepios with mosaic floors, in a quiet bay.

Walks
The Agia Irini gorge ends just above the village. The E4 also continues west to Paleochora.
Getting there and away
The road from Chania crosses the mountains via Agia Irini. In summer, ferries call at Sougia on the south-coast route between Paleochora and Chora Sfakion, with links to Agia Roumeli, Loutro and Gavdos.
