The fountain and square
The Kefalovrysi spring feeds a long fountain with lion-head spouts in the village centre, shaded by plane trees and surrounded by cafés, tavernas and shops. The springs once powered many watermills, some of which survive.
The village
Spili's name means 'cave', after the caves around it. It was already known by this name in the Venetian period, and several churches nearby have 14th-century frescoes. It is the seat of the Metropolis of Lambi, Syvritos and Sfakia, and the birthplace of the lyra player Thanassis Skordalos.

Walks
The E4 path crosses from Spili to Gerakari over the Kedros range (Mount Kedros, 1,776 m). Closer to home, the chapel of Agia Fotia, about 1.5 km east, has springs, an old mill and a waterfall in winter.
On the way south
Spili is the natural stop on the road from Rethymno to Plakias, Preveli or Agia Galini. The Kourtaliotiko gorge, with cliffs up to 600 m, lies on the road toward Preveli.
