Not the Heraklion Ammoudara
Don't confuse it with the long resort beach of Ammoudara west of Heraklion. This one is small, on Mirabello Bay, near Agios Nikolaos.
The beach
Crete's prevailing winds blow from the west and north-west, and Ammoudara faces east, so the sea is usually flat. The water is shallow and light blue. Sunbeds, umbrellas, water sports, a lifeguard and showers operate in summer, with Blue Flag status.
Hotels, rooms and tavernas are nearby. It gets crowded; long Almyros beach, 1.1 km west, has more space.
Getting there
Take the old road from Agios Nikolaos towards Sitia and Ierapetra; buses stop nearby and the beach is accessible for wheelchairs. The Almyros wetland is about 1 km away.
