The village
Lanes and steps climb the slope from the harbour, lined with tavernas and rooms with sea views. Evenings are lively in summer and quiet in spring and autumn. On a rock west of the harbour stands a monument to Daedalus and Icarus, who, according to legend, took off from here.
History
Agia Galini stands on the site of ancient Soulia, port of the inland city of Sybrita, where there was a sanctuary of Artemis.

Beaches and boats
The town beach lies east of the harbour by the mouth of the Platys (Amarianos) river. In summer, boats run to Agios Georgios, Agios Pavlos and the Paximadia islets, about 12 km offshore.
Day trips
Phaistos, Agia Triada and Matala are within about 30 minutes. Triopetra and Agios Pavlos are to the west, Spili and Rethymno to the north.
