Panagia Kera

The small three-aisled church just before the village is covered inside with frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries, among the best on Crete. It is a fenced site with a small entry fee; photography rules are posted at the door.

The village

Kritsa is one of Crete's main weaving centres, and shops along the main street sell textiles and embroidery. The lanes above the main street are quieter. The village was the setting for Jules Dassin's 1957 film Celui qui doit mourir.

Lato

About 3 km north, ancient Lato was one of the most powerful Dorian cities on Crete, built on a saddle between two acropoleis with views to the Mirabello Gulf. Its agora, steps and houses are well preserved, and it is rarely busy.

Kritsa gorge

The Kritsa gorge, on the route toward Tapes, offers a walk of a few hours for those who want one.
