The lake and harbour
Lake Voulismeni is deep for its size, which inspired legends that it had no bottom. Cafés and restaurants surround it, and the canal leads to the harbour, where boats leave for Spinalonga and the gulf.
A young town
The town was built from the 1860s, when eastern Crete needed a port, on the site of ancient Kamara, the harbour of Lato. Fragments of the ancient town are scattered through the centre.

Swimming
Kitroplatia is the small town beach a few minutes from the lake. Almyros is about 2 km south, and Voulisma, with white sand, about 12 km east.
Day trips
Elounda is 10 km north and Plaka, opposite Spinalonga, 16 km. Kritsa, with the Panagia Kera frescoes, and ancient Lato are about 10 km inland.
