Light and timing
Soft light and empty beaches go together: arrive early for both. For the colour of shallow lagoons, the sun needs to be high and the sea calm. West-facing beaches such as Falasarna, Matala and Triopetra are best at sunset.
Viewpoints
Some beaches are best seen from above: the path down to Balos, the Kastri hill between Matala and Red Beach, the cliffs above Preveli, and the coast road above Seitan Limania. Take care at cliff edges.

Respect
Avoid photographing people without their consent, especially on naturist beaches. Keep to paths in dunes and protected areas.
Drones
Drone flights are restricted near airports, military areas and some protected and archaeological sites. Check current rules before flying.
