Essentials

Water shoes protect against hot pebbles, rocks and sea urchins. Bring sun cream, a hat and sunglasses; the sun is strong from May to October. Carry at least 1.5 litres of water each, more for beaches reached on foot.

Shade

Organised beaches rent sunbeds and umbrellas, often for a set daily price. On wild beaches such as Agiofarago, Red Beach or Balos, shade is limited or absent, so bring a light umbrella.

Extras

A snorkel and mask turn rocky beaches into the best part of the day. A small first-aid kit, a dry bag for phones, and a bag to take your rubbish home are worth packing.

Leave at home

Glass bottles, and anything you would mind losing in the sand. Do not take sand, shells or stones from protected beaches such as Elafonisi or Balos.
