The building
The museum sits on a plot of more than 11,500 m² on the Halepa hill, about 98 m above sea level, with views over the city and coast. It was designed by Theofanis Bobotis and partners as two long monolithic volumes.
The collections
The three main galleries run chronologically from prehistory through the Minoan, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods, with finds from Chania and western Crete. Reconstructions and digital media help explain the objects, and there are tactile copies with Braille captions and an audio guide.
Upstairs, part of the Konstantinos, Marika and Kyriakos Mitsotakis Collection is shown.
