Chania has some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, from lagoons with pink sand on the far west coast to small sheltered coves a few minutes from town. Here are our ten favourites, with a short note on what each is like and how to plan your visit. Most are easiest to reach with a car; check our tips for driving in Crete before you set off.
Balos Beach
Known for its turquoise waters and breathtaking surroundings, Balos Beach is a must-visit for those who want to experience the true beauty of the Chania region.

Elafonisi Beach
Another gem of the Chania region, Elafonisi Beach is a unique blend of pink sand, clear waters, and stunning views.

Marathi Beach
This secluded beach offers a peaceful and picturesque escape from the bustling crowds.
Marathi is on the Akrotiri peninsula facing Souda Bay, with two small sandy coves, shallow water and fish tavernas by the sea. It is usually calm when the north wind blows.
Stavros Beach
Famous for its stunning scenery and the backdrop of the movie Zorba the Greek, Stavros Beach is a must-visit for those who appreciate natural beauty.

Seitan Limania Beach
This hidden cove boasts turquoise waters and is a great spot for snorkeling and diving.

Almyrida Beach
This sandy beach is surrounded by picturesque fishing villages and is popular for its shallow waters and safe swimming conditions.
Almyrida is in Apokoronas, east of Chania, with tavernas right on the sand and a relaxed village atmosphere.
Kalathas Beach
With its calm waters and shaded areas, Kalathas Beach is perfect for families with small children.
Kalathas is on Akrotiri, about 10 km from Chania town, with a small islet just offshore that strong swimmers like to reach.
Georgioupolis Beach
This long stretch of sand is popular for its lively atmosphere and its proximity to the charming town of Georgioupolis.
Here the Almyros river meets the sea, and a small chapel stands on a rock at the end of a causeway. Lake Kournas is a short drive inland.
Loutraki Beach
This charming beach is located near the historic Venetian port of Chania and is known for its clear waters and scenic surroundings.
Which Chania beach should I choose?
For postcard scenery, go to Balos or Elafonisi early in the morning. For sunsets choose Falasarna. With small children, Stavros, Kalathas and Almyrida are calm and shallow. If the wind is strong from the north, the south and Souda Bay beaches such as Marathi are usually calmer; the live beach tip on our home page checks the wind for you.
Do I need a car to visit the beaches in Chania?
Buses reach Falasarna, Kissamos and some Akrotiri beaches in summer, but for Balos, Elafonisi, Seitan Limania and Marathi a car is far easier. If you are hiring one, you can Find car rentals in Crete here.
